Weekly Newsletter 5/11/26
May 11th, 2026
We are kicking things into high gear, this month we will wrap up all of our end of year testing and assessments. Please help us prepare kiddos for these tests by helping them to get plenty of sleep, and to school on time each day so that they don't miss testing time.
Announcements:
- Welcome all incoming Kindergartners, we will have Kindergarten Open House on Friday 5/15, at 5pm. Come meet the teacher, get a tour, learn about kindergarten at Dorena, and stay afterwards for our Family Night event.
- Our last family night of the year is Friday 5/15, 5:30-7pm! Come just us as we celebrate you and our students for all of the hard work and partnership this school year. The theme is happy and proud, we will have a big project we have been working on for months displayed, and lots of activities to just have fun. Dinner is on us!
- 5th grade goes to outdoor school this week! Please ensure they arrive at school on time each day so that they don't miss the bus over to the camp. Ensure they have proper footwear and are wearing sunscreen!
- 4th grade will go on their annual fishing trip Thursday, 5/14. We will leave the school on foot at 11:30pm, walk to Turtle Rock and walk back at 1:30pm. Students are allowed and encouraged to bring their own fishing gear (we have about 10 to share). Students need to wear good walking shoes, bring a hat, a water bottle, sunscreen, and a spare change of clothes.
- NO GARDEN CLUB on Thursday 5/14.
- It's MAY testing month! We have State Assessments, District-Wide assessments, and benchmarking assessments. Lots of work for our students so that we can see how much growth they have made! Please help us with this testing by ensuring kids get to bed early and are at school everyday so that they can do their best and show what they know.
- We have started our last attendance challenge for the month of MAY! ALL students who have 90% or better attendance for the month of May will earn a movie party! Each classroom will be playing a different movie and have snacks. Students with 90% or better attendance will be eligible to see any movie they would like.
- Read-a-Thon! Our only school fundraiser has begun. Students are to log their reading minutes and we ask that they find sponsors to fund their reading achievements as a fundraiser for the school. All funds go to fun for our students with our attendance challenges, field day, field trips, and more. The class that reads the most minutes will earn the chance to participate in a school game. One student from each class that read the most minutes AND raised the most funds will also get to participate, even if their class did not win.
- We wanted to create some clarity around expectations regarding PE. To ensure student safety and full participation in Physical Education, please remember that closed-toed, rubber-soled athletic shoes are required for every PE class.
The Quick Facts:
Safe Footwear: Tennis shoes or sneakers with laces/Velcro.
Unsafe Footwear: Crocs, sandals, boots, heels, or slip-ons.
Forgot your shoes? No problem! Students may borrow a pair from our school collection or complete a written reflection activity to earn their daily credit.
Why it Matters:
Participation makes up 33% of your student’s final grade. We want to ensure every child can safely join the fun and keep their grades on track.
If your child doesn't wear sneakers to school, please help them remember to pack a pair in their backpack on PE days.
