Weekly Newsletter 10/4/24

October 4th, 2024

It is officially October and we have all of our students attending school on a regular full day schedule. We are really working hard on all students following our school rules of being safe, respectful, and responsible every day so that all students can learn at high levels.

Announcements:
  • PBIS Theme: Respect
  • Wednesday 10/2/24 will be our Walk and/or Roll to School Day, we encourage all students to walk or roll to school that day! We will have prizes and fun for participants!
  • Our district adopted a new assessment to measure reading, writing, and science skills that will track their skills from kindergarten all the way through to to High school! It is called MAPS and we will start administering that in the upcoming weeks.
  • I have been asked by staff to remind all families that personal items such as toys, electronics, games, etc. need to stay at home, they can often cause a big distraction in the classroom, can get lost or stolen, or get broken.
  • We have a lot of questions regarding when to keep kids home or when we will send kids home for health related reasons. Here are the guidelines we stick to, otherwise we expect students to be at school:
    • They have a temperature of 100.4 F or higher
    • Vomiting or diarrhea
    • Red eyes with drainage around them
    • A positive test of COVID-19, Chicken pox, the Flu, Pinkeye, Strep Throat, Measles, Whopping Cough or other infectious disease.
    • Severe pain or injury.
  • You might have gotten a call the last couple of weeks stating your student got a referral. What this means is that your student engaged in inappropriate behavior at school and we have documented it in a referral so that we can allow all necessary parties to know and be able to provide the support the students needs based on the offense. Minor referrals are for when a student needs a little extra support or a small reminder to stay on track. A Major Referral is when the student's behavior goes beyond minor infractions and involves more significant issues that disrupt the school environment or safety of others. These behaviors are not easily corrected in the classroom with a quick reminder and they require more serious intervention from the principal.
  • Please send students in layers with this wacky weather so that they can be warm in the morning and cool in the warm afternoons.
  • Our Lost and Found is growing, please remind students to check or you can come in a check yourselves after students leave for the day.
  • We do not currently have a microwave for students so if they are bringing a lunch from home we are asking that it not require heating to be eaten.
  • We have our Fall Festival at London school coming up and are in need of Pumpkins! If you have some you would like to donate please let us know!
  • We have decided since we are focusing so much on attendance this year that our Monthly Donuts and Dodgeball privilege will be for students who have attended 93% or more of that month and who have no more than 5 behavioral referrals.
  • We will be using Class Dojo for all of our communication this year, if you haven't already please sign up using this link
  • Transportation is using a new link for all of your bussing needs. Sign up here
  • We need updated permission forms for students who take medication at school, please fill out this form, or stop by we have copies in the office.
Data
  • Our current attendance average decreased the last two weeks to 91% attendance as a school.
  • Our percentage of regular attenders decreased this week we have 70% of students attending 90% or more.
  • Wednesday is our least attended day BUT it is equally as important as our other school days despite being a half day, because we spend the entire half day working on core instruction so when kids are late or miss Wednesday they are immediately behind and have to catch up.
  • As of now our Middle School class has the poorest attendance and our 4th/5th class has the best attendance!
Volunteers
  • We are always looking for more volunteers to help in our school. This year we have a new math curriculum and it requires a lot of prep! We also send home snack packs weeks and need help with assembly. If the activities listed below are something that you are interested in, please stop by our office and pick up a volunteer packet. Processing applications takes about 2 weeks so please get your forms in quickly.
    • Helping in the classroom
    • Attending and assisting on field trips
    • Helping with school events such as assemblies, field day, etc.

  • Every Friday we have Panther Pride day where we encourage all students to wear their panther gear or dress in our school colors Black and Yellow to show their Dorena Pride. It is also hat day, students can wear a hat for 25 cents or 3 Panther Pride Tickets.
